Keisel the Diesel

The Diesel is now a member of the Steelers for Possibly up to 5 more years. That's the term of the contract he just signed with the Steelers. They've been locking up players left and right since the end of last season, starting slow but picking up the pace prior to Keisel's signing. The only cog that should be signed is Casey Hampton. I am very surprised that they signed Keisel merely because they've recently spent quite a bit in bonuses and the vault's gotta be getting low. Maybe they can find a few more gold bricks for snack before the season starts.

The Steelers also made a few cuts and lost an important part of last years Super Bowl team. It looked like Darnell Stapleton was going to lose his starting job to Trai Essex anyway, but he didn't think he wouldn't have any playing time at all this year. The Steelers placed Stapleton in Injured Reserve, which put an end to his season before it started. His knee injury was not responding to surgery performed earlier and that was it. Unfortunate because he played well last season and it hurts the depth chart. Someone else will need to step up. It will probably be Doug Legursky, a free agent from Marshall last year who has impressed the coaches with his play at both Guard and Center. Being able to play more than one position never hurts.

Other cuts include WRs Martin Nance and Steven Black, Center Alex Stepanovich, and Safety Derrick Richardson.

SO MUCH...

for the winning streak. It is now a distant memory. 3 losses in Milwaukee, which adds to the previous losing streak in Milwaukee makes the grand total of the Milwaukee losing streak to 21. Today I watched most of the doubleheader with the Reds. That was painful. What is the percentage of doubleheaders where a team is swept? It has to be less than 10. Well, the Pirates managed to do it. That stinks.

I can't stand the Reds. I just hope this plan works so they can consistently beat the Reds. I couldn't even name more than a couple of players on their team. Bronson Arroyo and his anti Pirate stance. He is annoying. They might be the nicest guys, they just annoy the heck out of me just because they play for the Reds. It burns me up even more than Kip Wells beat the Pirates in the first game. Why couldn't you win a few for the Pirates here and there Kip. They should have jumped all over him early in the game. But they let him get through that and he just kept getting better and better til they took him out. Geez!

So goes the roller coaster ride this season has brought. Not many ups, the 5 game streak was one and I really can't think of others. There's still hope for next year. There's always hope. Maybe they'll have another winning streak. They better. That disappointing number 82 in the loss column is creaping up.

17-0

I don't remember before this year how much talk there was about the 3rd preseason game being the most important and how they gameplan and all, but this year that is all the talk. It probably has been previous years too, but it just seems the discussion has been more than usual.

The Steelers seem to be clicking right now. Roethlisberger took a week off from preseason games and it didn't seem to affect his performance going 15 of 19

SALEMPIRATE

Thanks for your comment SalemPirate. You were absolutely right. The Pirates record on the road has been horrible this year and that continued to show in Milwaukee. 3 losses in a row with not much of a fight put up. Unfortunate that they can't end that losing streak in Milwaukee. They were playing so well in Pittsburgh. I thought for sure they'd could pull out 1.

Poll Results - When will Pirates win?

The results are in and by a margin of 2 to 1 voters expect the next winning season for the Pirates in 2012, coming in a close 2nd was 2011. I myself hope they keep this recent winning trend up and win 82 in 2010. Let's go Bucs!

2 of 3

The Pirates had to fight to the end of all 3 games but they took 2 of 3 from the World Series Champs. The Legend came through again with a 2, yes 2, run Home Run in the eighth inning to take the lead and from the Matt Capps sealed the deal in the ninth. Remember my article about gel. There's more and more proof of that each day of these guys gelling as a team.

Let's see what they can do on the upcoming 7 game road trip. Let's take at least 4 of these games.

There's the little matter of another losing streak that they need to take care of in Milwaukee. 18 games to be exact. It would be nice to put an end to that and get it behind us. No reason it should continue with the Buccos as hot and in sync as they are.

DEFENSIVE LINE

As discussed in my teaser article earlier today, it looks like the Steelers made a wise choice with their first round draft choice this year with Ziggy Hood. Of course preseason stats don't accurately tell the story of how a player will do during actual games against other team's starters but there is a reason for preseason games other than giving more revenue to the teams. It is to evaluate the new players to see if they measure up. As I said Ziggy seems to be measuring up. He has been providing pressure on opposing QBs in these first two games and that is great to see. The other good news is that the Steelers did not lose any of their starters, so the line remains intact and unless Ziggy blows them away he will not be taking any of their positions this year, but providing much needed quality depth as these guys are getting up there.

The starters
Aaron Smith: When he went down the year after the Super Bowl the Steelers defense had quite a bit of trouble stopping the run. He should have been making the Pro Bowl every year for the last 4 or 5 years, but the end is not the focal point in this defense and it's not their job to get the sacks, but he's provided plenty of pressure on QBs and is the reason the defense was No. 1 for most of the year last year against the run.

Casey Hampton/Chris Hoke: The 2 headed monster. Hampton plays the running downs and takes up double teams while the linebackers rack up the sacks. Best run stopping Nose Tackle in the game, he is a free agent after this year and the Steelers need to resign him if there's any money left. Chris Hoke is the prime example of unselfishness. He has been on this team for 9 years and could have gone to other teams and started for most of them. He is a quality 1B player. He comes in on passing downs and provides a little more mobility for the defense. There is very little dropoff from Hampton.

Brett Keisel: took over a few years ago and Kimo VO left via free agency. He is just as important as the other 2 guys and it looked like early in his years with the Steelers he would provide some sacks. He has one occasionally but he's mostly another run stuffer.

The backups:
If Ziggy continues to play well I would expect him to be the number 1 or 2 backup, but the coaches could have different ideas. They might want him to watch and learn for a while.

Travis Kirschke will continue to back up Aaron Smith but this is his 13th year.

Scott Paxson in his 2nd year out of Penn State will be the number 3 Nose Tackle if they keep 3. If not he'll probably end up on the practice squad or be one of those guys that gets signed, released and resigned. Hopefully the other 2 will stay healthy and he won't be needed.

Nick Eason will back up Brett Keisel. He is in his 7th year out of Clemson.

Steve McLendon, a free agent, and Ra'Shon Harris, their 6th rounder will fight it out for any remaining positions on the D Line. Expect them to Keep Harris as a project.

All in all these guys are the best 3-4 defensive linemen in the NFL. But they need some youth. That's where Ziggy comes in.

Look for the next poll question: How many sacks will Ziggy have?

Next up: Special teams

Gel

No, not hair gel. The gel that happens when a team plays together for years and knows what other players are going to do before they do it. This Pirates team, after a dismal stretch, has put together a string of wins in the last week and looks to be gelling. The thing is they've played together very little. That would explain the losing streak that preceded the 5 game winning streak, but not the winning streak. These guys are looking like a team that can put up a few winning streaks of more than 2 games. Hopefully they can keep it up. If they can do it the rest of the season it is something to look forward to next year for us and the players. The pitching should continue to grow, if one guy doesn't do it we have others to choose from. Huntington did get pitchers in all of his trades and that should provide competition. Except for Charlie Morton's short stint in the 10 run effort I don't remember too many 1 or 2 inning outings from these guys. I'd like to see Ohlendorf continue to pick up wins but don't overdo the innings.

Did you see another team had a 3 run rally in the 9th last night? Indianapolis. Funny how both teams came through in the 9th.

Dennis Dixon

Haven't seen anything on the severity of Dixon's injury other than the fact that he was not wearing a sling yesterday. He could be an important cog in the system if CB goes down. Charlie hasn't been the healthiest of QBs since arriving in Pittsburgh in mostly a backup role. See 2008-2009 season highlights, but he makes a good backup because he can play in short stints. Dixon was playing well in the preseason and despite the fact that I think Batch will keep the backup role this year Dennis at least is pushing Charlie with his playmaking. Next year if Charlie is still around I would look for Dixon to take over the backup role. I would really like to see Dennis in the Wildcat role this year too. Doubt it will happen with Arians controlling the offense.

DEFENSIVE LINE WEDNESDAY

I'll review the defensive line Wednesday. Then finally what everyone has really been waiting for, special teams.

Little tidbit to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Except for Casey Hampton the Steelers can't say they've been real efficient in picking first round defensive lineman that were high quality players. But, from what we've seen in the preseason, they just might found a diamond in the rough this year. Ziggy hood, their first round selection has been playing well and is racking up the sacks in preseason. A good sign for this team with the aging line that they have found little in the draft to become younger. Of course, they did win the Super Bowl last year and everyone is back from that team less a backup or two. Stay tuned for the rest of the story on the defensive line.

New poll question starting today

The new poll question for the week, when will the Pirates next winning season be: 2010, 2011, 2012

Just short

The Pirates came up just short of the 48 game winning streak I predicted but they can start a new one against Philly. Too bad they couldn't take some of those runs from Saturday and add them to yesterday. It was good to see Ryan Doumit have a good game Saturday. He was hitting it hard Friday, and was robbed by a good defensive play to right in one at bat. Unfortunately it's nearing season end, but he still has another month to show his stuff unless they rest him for next season and play Jarmillo more.

LINEBACKERS

It's not a secret that the Steelers have been the NFL team with the best linebackers for many years now. It also helps that they have a D Coordinator that can utilize all the talent they have been able to accumulate at that position. I'm sure they had others throughout their history but the recognition for their linebacking corps started back when they started drafting their Hall of Famers in the 70's. Andy Russell and the Jack's set the pace for a future stacked with big name Linebackers. Others along the line included Bryan Hinkle, Mike Merriweather, David Little, Greg Lloyd, Levon Kirland, Chad Brown, Kendrell Bell, Jason Gildon, Joey Porter, Clark Haggans, and the guys they have now; Harrison, Woodley, and Timmons. Even when they had to go outside the draft they found a few good ones that fit the Steelers mold in Kevin Greene and James Farrior. These guys have all had Steelers Football in them.

The 2 outside linebackers strike fear into opposing quarterbacks each game. Harrison and Woodley sacked the QB time after time last year and had a competition to see who would end up with the team sack lead for the year. Harrison pulled away and took the team lead for good, but good things are ahead for Woodley. He played well beyond his 2 years experience in the league and looked more like a seasoned veteran in the playoff, chasing down Flacco and Warner. It didn't hurt that those teams were putting anyone they could on Harrison trying to keep him away. So Harrison was locked up with a new contract and this is Woodley's in his 3rd year so they're good with those 2 guys.

The 2 inside guys are James Farrior and Lawrence Timmons. James Farrior, the crafty veteran that came to the Steelers via free agency after spending 5 years there has been a rock at the position since he arrived. He is the defenses quarterback and despite his longevity in the league is ageless, he's a timex. Timmons was drafted the same year as Woodley and has been more and more productive as his experience grows. Larry Foote, the stalwart at the other inside linebacker position saw the writing on the wall but was able to keep Timmons on the bench for 2 years. After last season was over and despite having the contract for another year, Larry decided that he would probably be better off somewhere where he could continue playing full time and not come out every other play for Timmons to take over for him. Thus, Mr. Timmons inherited the starting position. He played extremely well last season and looks to be another brick in the foundation for the Steelers.

So, that leaves the rest of the guys in camp to fight for the rest of the backup duties. It helps if you're a backup to be able to play special teams: the Steelers special teams improved significantly from previous years and that had a lot to do with a couple of linebackers on the special teams. Keyaron Fox and Patrick Bailey have been very noticeable on special teams and made some big hits to improve the coverage unit from the previous year. Arnold Harrison and Andre Frazier have provided the depth and now experience after being on the team and learning from the older Linebackers.

Expectations have been that Bruce Davis in his second year out of UCLA would provide additional depth at the position. There is some optimism for his chances of making the team because of improved play, but his skills on special teams are lacking whic does not help his cause. May end up on the practice squad.

The other 2 linebackers Tom Korte and Andrew Schantz will have an uphill battle trying to make this squad.

James Harrison, 5, Kent State
James Farrior, 13, Virginia
LaMarr Woodley, 3, Michigan
Lawrence Timmons, 3, Florida State

Keyaron Fox, 6, Georgia Tech,
Andre Frazier, 5, Cincinnati, ROLB
Arnold Harrison, 4, Georgia, LOLB
Patrick Bailey, 2, Duke, LOLB
Bruce Davis, 2, UCLA, LOLB
Donovan Woods, 2, Oklahoma State, ROLB
Tom Korte, R, Hillsdale
Andrew Schantz, R, Portland State

LINEBACKERS

Next review for the Steelers is Linebackers.

Two men on

The Bucs won for the fourth time in a row last night thanks to the legend, and guess what, there were 2 men on base when he hit this one. This guy's story is great. Don't you think the Twins could find a place on their roster for him right now. More home runs than any other rookie. Who are the candidates for rookie of the year right now? He has to be up there unless there's an age limit.

How's my prediction for 48 wins in a row looking right now? I'll be laughing all the way to the World Series. Anybody seen the movie, "Major League." It could happen.

SAFETIES

The Steelers have 2 All Pro calibre safeties one dependable backup with 2 Super Bowl rings and a lot of inexperience behind them. Besides the defensive line which the Steelers started to address with Ziggy this year, another position where the Steelers are getting a little gray is the Safety position. When they brought Ryan Clark over from Washington I thought he would be a backup for Anthony Smith, a hard hitting safety the Steelers had drafted. Ryan Clark won that battle for the starting position and Smith stock fell as fast as snowball rolling downhill. Smith is a hard hitting Safety but unfortunately never harnessed that style effectively with the Steelers. He would get out of control and provided some hard hits to his teammates in practice, most notably to Hines Ward. So, he packed his bags and headed off to Green Bay. The Steelers must be pretty secure with what they have because there was not a safety drafted this year. Here's the ones they do have though.

Troy Polamalu, 7, USC:
Hall of Fame, 'nuf said. No, I've got another word. Clutch. Did you see the last score in the AFC Championship game last year?

Ryan Clark, 8, LSU
If James Farrior wasn't the QB of the defense Ryan Clark would have that title. He sees all and makes all the plays. I'm of course biased, but these guys are the best Safety tandem in the league.

Tyrone Carter, 10, Minnesota:
Carter was picked up right before Super Bowl XL and has been very valuable as a backup and starter when injuries have occurred. He is still dependable, but 10 years is a long career in the NFL. I don't have any stats to back it up but Safeties seem to be one of the positions where careers last a little longer than other positions. He should continue to provide some quality backup this year.

Ryan Mundy, 1, WVU
The Steelers tried to address part of their aging safety core by picking Ryan Mundy after he had a great one year stint at WVU after attending Michigan for 4. One of those obscure NCAA rules allowed that. Don't know if he would have been picked in the draft the year before, but that extra year allowed him to showcase his talents and the Steelers thought enough of him to use a draft pick. He was injured during training camp last year and the Steelers released him and later signed him to the practice squad. They are hoping that he will show something this year in training camp enough to make them think that he can provide some depth at the position. Reports have been so-so so far though. May be another practice squad candidate if he shows enough even for that.

Derrick Richardson, R, New Mexico State
Free agent signee, would say a candidate for the practice squad. Competition for Mundy. They need someone in case of injury.

Could pick someone up after rosters are cut. Definite draft need next year.

Isaac Redman Fan

Well, I can say that there is 1 Isaac Redman fan out there. The poll turnout for starting halfback was less than spectacular, but the results 2 votes for fast Willie and one for the new kid on the block Isaac Redman. He's turned some heads with his TD productivity and at least one person would like to see him start at halfback this year. I'm sticking with the man for the last few years though, fast Willie. New poll coming up soon. What do the rest of you think about Willie, Isaac or Rashard.

SAFETIES

Tonight I review the Steelers safeties.

THEY PULL YOU BACK IN

Just when you thought the Pirates had nothing left this season, they pull us back in with a 3 game sweep against the Brew Crew. I was losing interest, but somehow after that horrible stretch they pull off a sweep and get decent pitching, including the bullpen and Mr. Capps.

So much for how much better Milwaukee is doing as a franchise than Pittsburgh. One playoff season and done. You gotta have pitching. True, they don't have that 17 season streak like the Pirates do, but what do they have? One playoff appearance. Not anything to brag about. Call me when you make the NLCS.

The Legend strikes again

My man, Garrett Jones hit a 2 run home run alreay in the game tonight against the Brewers. Let's get something started.

Haven't heard anything about potential Strasburg signings 2 hours and 49 minutes to go.

I want to put the Pirates Management into a position where they'd be embarrassed if they didn't sign this can't miss guy in next year's draft.

Can the Pirates sign Strasburg

Guess who is coming down to the wire to sign their number 1 draft pick this year. No, not the Pirates. With their draft strategy of signing a bunch of players with potential instead of a Pedro Alvarez and a few others with their budget, they signed Tony Sanchez back in June and he's been playing in WV for a while now. The Washington Nationals are running out of time to sign Strasburg to a contract before the deadline arrives tomorrow night. If they don't sign him he goes back into the pool and waits for next year's draft. The Nats won't be able to draft him unless he gives them consent to. The Royals, Pirates and Nats are in competition to wind up the season as the worst team in baseball. I thought the Nats had it wrapped up a few months ago, but they ran off a winning streak and the Buccos ran off a non-winning streak and the Royals continued their consistent losing to keep on pace. It's hard to tell who will win, I mean lose. If the Nats don't sign Strasburg they could end up with the number one and two picks, number 2 as compensation for not signing Strasburg this year.
Even if the Pirates ended up with 1 or 3, could they sign him? I really doubt they'll give up $25 million to sign this guy. It is too much of a chance. 100 mph fastball, but that does not guarantee wins. He could be a bust just as easily as the next guy and unless Bob Nutting wins the lottery that lock on the purse strings is not going to open up enough to let that much cash spill out. They'd rather sign 23 players that don't do anything than 1 player that might be a hall of famer.

CORNERBACKS

Let's put it this way, the Steelers finished first in the NFL in pass defense. The good news is that there is a starter left at each cornerback position on that defense. The bad news is that they lost one of their starters to free agency. A tricky way of saying that the Steelers actually lost one of their best cornerbacks to the Arizona Cardinals, Bryant McFadden. He and Deshea fought for the starting position for the first part of the season and McFadden finally took over and played extremely well. He definitely was one of the best players in the defensive backfield. He's made quite a few excellent and timely plays in his time with the Steelers. But, Bryant had an arm injury and a fifth rounder from Louisville was called on to step up and start in his place. William Gay took over for Bryant and played so well during the injury that after McFadden came back they alternated plays in order to take advantage of both players. Does that make me feel a little better about how they're going to deal with the loss of McFadden. Uh, yeah. The only thing McFadden has on Gay is a little experience and maybe a little more speed. But, since he arrived as a fifth round draft pick Gay has made plays and looked like an up and comer. That's the reason the Steelers felt a little more comfortable in letting McFadden go in free agency. They should pick up a supplemental draft pick for losing McFadden too. So, here's the rest of the story on the cornerbacks and how the depth chart looks.

There was a reason the Steelers maintained the number one passing defense in the NFL.
They had 2 quality cornerbacks and 2 quality safeties and above average depth behind.
It will be no surprise that the starting cornerbacks this year will be Ike Taylor and William Gay and Deshea Townsend will be the third cornerback. Deshea has been the glue that holds the cornerback group together for years. A few years back one NFL commentator stated that he was one of the best, if not the best, cover corner in the league. He's in his 12th year and still can hold his own against the other 2 starters, maybe just not every play. If either went down I'm sure he'd step right in with no dropoff. After the top 3 there's a bit of a dropoff in experience. The Steelers picked up Keiwan Ratliff as a free agent, he has the most years with the group and has played for a few other teams including the Bengals. The fact that they released him doesn't say much for his chances.

The others:
Anthony Madison, 4th, Alabama: Has been a great special teams player and may be looked at to step up and provide backup help at cornerback
Keanan Lewis, Rookie, Oregon State: 3rd round pick this year. Expect him to make the team simply because he was a 3rd rounder. Needs to show something in the preaseason though or he may be a third round casualty.
Joe Burnett, Rookie, Central Florida: There's been a buzz in training camp with this guy. Intercepted a pass in the first preseason game. Probably will make the team.
Keiwan Ratliff, 6th, Florida: Bengals Cast off, but they did bring him in. May be kept because of experience.
Roy Lewis, 2 Washington: Signed, released, and resigned several times to the practice squad last year. Expect more of the same this year. Did play last year on special teams in 1 or 2 games.

I expect to see Ike Taylor, William Gay, Deshea Townsend, Joe Burnett, Keanan Lewis, and Anthony Madison on the roster. Keiwan Ratliff has a chance but needs to show something in the preseason or he's gone. Roy Lewis will probably be on and off the Practice squad unless injuries get him on the roster.

17

17 runs. That's about all I can write about this game. Any chance we can give Charlie Morton back. We'll throw in a couple mill if they'll take him off our hands.

Limas Sweed

I've been reading all the commentaries about Limas through his rookie season; after the last Baltimore game last season and through the offseason. The positive about Limas is that this guy is 6' 4" tall and had a good career at Texas. Good because he had above average years there until his senior year where he ended up with only 19 catches. The 19 catches was a decline from his Junior year because he injured his wrist and was not fully able to show what he could do. Even though he played little that year the Steelers thought they had a second round steal based on his prior workload and his favorable size. Ben would have his Plaxico Burress type receiver he could throw the jump ball to knowing he'll have a good chance of outjumping most dbs. Luckily the Steelers already had enough quality WRs last year because Limas went through quite a bit of growing pains in his rookie year.

Another reason the Steelers have had success in the Cowher and early Tomlin era; they rarely expect a first year player to contribute significantly except on special teams. These players have an aptitude to learn football languages and systems quickly, but going from college to pro is a shock to the system that some are able to adapt to and some are not. Scouts are not always correct when interpreting how college skills will translate to Pro skills. Plus, the mental makeup of these guys sometimes causes implosions and turns can't miss first rounders into major bust. I call them Ryan Leafs. Luckily, the Steelers have managed to make good decisions with their draft picks lately. You can't hit on all of them, but they've found players that fit the system and can provide backup work when necessary. So, back to Limas. Fans expect him to come in and take over the number one position and catch 100 balls his first year. It took Hines Ward a couple years to become a regular. Around the same time Hines was starting out the Steelers drafted Troy Edwards with their number 1 pick and he caught around 60 passes his first year. Louis Lipps (Looooo) was another player who had another decent first year. But immediate success is hard to come by at the receiver position, especially when you're not on the field much. So, he caught some passes during the regular season and dropped some. So did the Steelers 3rd WR last year, Nate the great, and he had already played a few years. But Nate dropped a few last year too. Then all of a sudden Hines gets injured in the 2nd most important game of the year and Limas moves up to number 3. I would say he would not be the only person in the world with a few gametime jitters. Then he dropped a surefire TD pass from Ben that would have eased some tension in a close game. But, they won without that catch as we all know and they added a 6th SB the next game. Betwee that game and now is the time that most players grow by leaps and bounds in their understanding of the game. Lamarr Woodley played well his first season. But, look what he did year 2. He was a major factor amongst alot of above average talent on the Steelers. Limas played made some great catches in the game Thursday, made one drop that could have been a first down on the eight. He's still growing though and indications are that he has improved and the game has slowed down for him. If he can provide as many catches as Nate did last year that would be a plus for this offense and maybe he'll catch a few of those jump balls. Maybe, just maybe he'll give them much more. Can't wait to see what he does.

NEXT

Gee, let's just keep rotating those starting pitchers in and out of the lineup. I know that Kevin Hart has just been here a short time, but he's made quick work in his few starts to get that era out of the 3s. After a short break in the losing the Buccos started a new streak, losing to the Rockies 5-0. Let's try that strategy of running at will again. 5 stolen bases every night could only help this struggling offense. I thought the legend would pad his crazy HR stats in the Rockies but he hasn't managed to hit any in the first 2 games. Hang in there and get all the experience the rest of the season you can guys.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The offensive line is always one of the most unstable positions on the Steelers each year. By unstable I don't mean bad. I just mean there is always so much discussion and drama surrounding who the starters be. I saw a question in the Black and Gold Blog asking if Kraig Urbik will be considered as a starter. The answere was no. Why? That is not how the Steelers do things. The offensive line play is crucial to the Steelers formula for success. The only players that have started in their first year in my memory were Alan Faneca, Kendall Simmons and Marvel Smith. As everyone knows the O Line has been under fire the last few years because of the sacks that been has taken. There's always the other side of the story. One of Ben's many strengths is that he's able to hold onto the ball a long time and move around until he finds the open man. That has lead to a lot of big plays from Ben, but also resulted in the big sack total. That's Ben and that's how he'll continue to play. But, he's one of the best because of it.
The other facet of the offensive line is run blocking. This is another way to gauge the quality of the line. Unfortunately, they didn't fare well in this category either. The Steelers finished with their worst rushing total since the Tommy Gun offense. 'nuf said. There were a couple factors to take into account, Marvel Smith and Kendall Simmons. Starters for years, and as you saw above, good enough to start as rookies. They were both injured during the season, replaced and ultimately let go. It's too bad because they were great Steelers and good guys. Darnell Stapleton and Max Starks both came in during the year and played extremely well. Funny that Max Starks lost his job after being a starter, then the Steelers ended up keeping him as a backup for a huge contract and eventually returned to his starting role. If Bill Cowher had remained I think Starks would have been cut. Just how things work out.

Here's how the line will shake out this year, hopefully last year they gelled and will start improving just for the fact they're more familiar:

LG
Chris Kemoeatu, 5 Finally secured the starting role last year. Pretty much a lock.
Jeremy Parquet, 3 Played little last year.

LT
Max Starks, 6 Signed big contract in offseason, Will be starter unless he gets content with the contract and doesn't play up to his ability
Tony Hills, 2 Draft pick last year, hopefully a year of watching did him good, possible backup.
Jason Capizzi, 3 Spent time between the practice squad and the roster, could compete with Tony Hills for backup or go back to the practice squad

RG
Trai Essex, 5 Has put in his time and it looks like he'll get his chance to start. Has played well in backup roles when called on.
Darnell Stapleton, 3 Currently sitting out 2-4 weeks because of knee injury. Played well last year after replacing Marvel Smith, but it doesn't look like he'll start out at number 1 this year.
Kraig Urbik, R A project that will need some seasoning, most likely practice squad material if he makes the team.

RT
Willie Colon, 4 Also, took control of his position last year but also had a lot of holding calls in crucial situations. Still young though.

C
Justin Hartwig, 8 The old vet at the position. A quality starter that Steelers picked up as a free agent. Dependable. Currently Injured.
Doug Legursky, 1 On and off the practice squad last year. May start in preseason because of injuries to Hartwig and Stapleton. If those 2 are healthy at the beginning of the season it may be another year of travelling to and from the practice squad.
A.Q. Shipley, R Another project. Late round draft pick that the Steelers liked quite a bit. Will fight with others for practice squad spot unless he plays exceptionally in preseason.
Alex Steponavich, 6 Signed by the Steelers to shore up the position after Hartwig and Stapleton injuries arose. Unless these 2 aren't healthy he'll probably be a cut.

Ramon Foster, free agent from Tennessee. Looking good in preseason. May be a find.

Tomorrow, I'll switch over to defense. Cornerbacks

8 In a row

This stinks. Another 8 game losing streak. Even the Nationals have an 8 game winning streak. What is the longest winning streak the Pirates have had this year? Doesn't seem like they've won more than 2 in a row the whole year.

RUNNING BACKS

Strangely enough my review of running backs coincides with the goal line drills on Sunday.

It seems like the defense put up a pretty good fight against the running backs this time. A free agent was the highlight of the running backs. No, not Willie Parker. This guy's name is Isaac Redman. He's a free agent out of Bowie State in Maryland. He scored in his only 2 chances. Supposedly he's performed well in training camp, but don't expect him to be there when it's all over. My guess is if, and that is a big if, he impresses Mike Tomlin and others he might end up on the practice squad. As we've seen before, the Steelers do have experience turning free agent running backs into stars.....

Which leads me into the players who will probably make the team and the order in which they will be on the depth chart.
1. Willie Parker, despite the fact that the Steelers do have a number 1 draft pick at halfback and a former free agent, not Isaac Redman, I would think the Steelers would go with the running back that has been part of their last 2 Super Bowl wins. Remember the guy rarely played in college. There is no way he should be out of gas. He has missed several games in the last 2 years, but like the Bus, he'll have a young stud to spell him or take over when or if those injury situations pop up.

2. Rashard Mendenhall
Unfortunately, we didn't get to see everything this guy could do because of that team in Baltimore. It's hard to believe that old guy that plays there was able to break Rashard's collarbone, but he did and ruined the rookies season before he got his chance to show what he can do. But, he's healed now and ready to show his stuff. Needless to say, he's a first round draft choice and he's going to get his chance. He's not the bus and probably won't ram his way into the end zone like Jerome, but I have a feeling he'll get his share of TDs and yards. But, for right now Willie is number 1.

2B. Mewelde Moore
For those of you who read this regularly, this was a test. I don't know how I possibly did it but I left out one of the most important parts of the team last year. He also was a free agent pick up. There could easily have been an argument for him to be the team MVP. He won several games for them almost single handedly. He was brought in from the Vikings almost as an afterthought. Well then Willie went down. No problem we've got this first round draft pick rookie that will take up the slack. That other guy can spell him if he gets overworked and will probably get us a few yards here and there. Rashard starts his first game, gets injured, and is gone for the year. Who else is on the depth chart. Oh yeah, that guy we brought in from the Vikes. Better sign Russell just in case. Had a 3 game run against Jacksonville, Cincinnati, and NY Giants where he rushed for 99, 120, and 84 and scored 3 touchdowns. He is a valuable insurance policy and I would expect him to remain the third down back. Doesn't hurt to have him waiting in the wings just in case, too.

3. Cary Davis
I really don't have anything much to say about Cary. He doesn't carry the ball much, and when he does carry it he doesn't carry it far. He is a fullback, so it's his job to get tough yards. The Steelers didn't weren't real successful at that last year until they started using Gary Russell in those situations. He improved those situations slightly but not enough to stay on the team. He was released and wasn't even good enough to stay on the Bengals long after they signed him. Mike Tomlin sees something in Cary, but watch your back Mr. Davis there's a new fullback in town that has a reputation for getting those yards.

4. Frank Summers, the Steelers 5th round pick out of UNLV specializes in short yardage, but can also catch the ball some if needed. I keep thinking back to Dan Kreider catching balls out of the backfield. It usually didn't look pretty, but he'd catch them unless they were thrown at his shoelaces. What was wrong with Dan Kreider anyway. I think he's still available. But the Steelers spent a 5th round pick on Frank the Tank so I expect they'll give him a shot at making the team. If he shows anything I'd take him over Cary Davis, but Cary has the experience and was on the Super Bowl team. Hate to mess with success.

5. The other 2 guys are Stefan Logan and Justin Vincent both 1 year players not likely to make the team, but Free agent running backs have made this team before.

6-4

Another close one that the Pirates let slip away, young players, young pitching, close games, losses. The evidence is piling up that it's hard to win with young players, unless they all hit home runs every day like Garrett Jones or are as talented as Andrew McCutcheon. Maholm pitched ok, but young, inexperienced teams make mistakes. As I said the Legend hit another HR last night, that's 12. The unfortunate thing is most of them have been with noone on base. Ryan Doumit also knocked one out. Maybe his hitting is coming back. It would be a good time for that.

Surprisingly, I checked the standings and the Pirates were in first place. I didn't think they were anywhere close to that. ....It was the Venezualan Summer League though. They are the Pirates and maybe some day one of them will play for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

QUARTERBACKS

This one's pretty much a slam dunk with the departure of Byron Leftwich. But, there are a few questions that reside in the quarterback area of the team.
1. What's going to happen to Ben and the Civil Suit? Will it be a distraction? Only time will tell but we know what happened last time there was a distraction after the Super Bowl Win. Motorcyle accident, appendicitis, write off the season. This is, of course, quite a bit different. Ben does not have a physical injury to overcome to hamper his performance. He just has to stay focused on the team and what he is doing mentally to perform to his standards on the field. I know if that was going on with me it would be a hard task whether I was innocent or guilty. Don't know Ben, but from what I've read of the story is sounds very fishy. She does not file a criminal suit, but a civil suit, and waits for a year to do it. These athletes make their share of cash and they have a lot of people that would like to get their hands on it. Time will tell what happens with this story. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Ben will be the starter this year. I know I'm taking a chance with that prediction, but Mike Reilly the free agent out of Central Washington is looking pretty tough.

2. Charlie Batch vs. Dennis Dixon
My first thought here is Charlie Batch has performed well for the Steelers in the time he has backed up Ben and Tommy Maddox in his time with the Steelers. Why mess with a good game. I think we've been lucky to have him as the no. 2 QB. It's been a luxury. Yes, he was a starter for the Lions, but he was a starter. When he first came to the Steelers I think he wanted to build his resume back up and get another starting job elsewhere and maybe in some region of the back of his mind maybe overcome the other challengers and become number 1 in Pittsburgh. Only he and his agent know if he had any serious offers from other clubs to compete for a starting job elsewhere, but he has decided to sign a few contracts with the Steelers and remain in Pittsburgh. There is always a thought, is he becoming too comfortable here and thinking he doesn't have to do anything but show up to keep his job. It's possible but to me he seems to be a quality hard working guy. He could have sat home last year after going on injured reserve and collected his paycheck and fumed at all the good things being said about Byron. Instead, anytime you looked on the sidelines he was there with headphones on or talking to other players or Ben or Byron. That made up my mind what kind of guy he was.

....But, there's this young gun named Dennis Dixon, there's always a young gun looking to make his mark. He probably would have been a draft pick in the first round or 2nd if he hadn't blown out his knee in his senior season at Oregon. So, the Steelers got a steal right? Well, you don't find Ben Roethlisbergers in the 5th round of the draft usually, uh, the Patriots lucked out with that Brady guy. So, Dixon still has some things to prove. He needs to prove that he is better than Charlie Batch.

Trivia: Who threw Hines his 800th reception?
In the only game he played in last year DD threw Hines his 800th catch.

That's a good start to a career. If he can beat out Charlie all he has to do is sit on the sidelines and watch Ben win. The good thing about Dennis is that he would be a good fit for the newest fad in pro football, the Wildcat. He could supplant CB as the 2nd QB some weeks if the Steelers decide that the Wildcat would be helpful. I don't even know if they have any of those plays in their playbooks. But, surely they'd put some in for the hottest fad going. We'll see in training camp how much Dennis learned in his first year.

My thought is Charlie will return to his role as backup and Dennis will make the team as no. 3. I think he's a hot enough commodity that they wouldn't put him on the practice squad, but it's a game of numbers and if they see someone who could help the team and they need a roster spot, he may be relegated.

Running Backs are next, either tonight or tomorrow.

Close ones

Do you know what happens when you have a bunch of young players who haven't played together much. If you're pitching is decent enough to make up for an offense that struggles to score runs you have a lot of close games that usually go the other way. Yesterday they lost 3-4, today they are tied 6-6 after giving up a run in the 8th. There are the blowouts too, 6-0 to a pitcher with a 6+ era and 8-4 to the Nationals. Hopefully they'll pull it out tonight.

I'm just wondering what happened to Neil Walker? He was a can't miss. We've seen them before though as Pirates fans. All those pitchers and none of them worth a AAA player now. It is incredible that they could not have lucked out and found one dominant guy in all those draft picks. I hate to say anything but Pedro Alvarez looks like the real deal. I can't wait to see him in a Pirates uni, patrolling 3rd or 1st.

Tight Ends

Probably should have included the TEs with the WRs because the decision with TEs is very anticlimactic. Heath Miller is the best all around Tight End in the league that noone but the Steelers and their fans recognize. There is a huge dropoff after Heath. Matt Spaeth is the number 2. He can catch some balls but is not the blocker that Heath is. When Heath went down last year I was pretty happy with his receiving production. But, Ben needs that protection so he can take all the time he wants to move around and find the open guy downfield. Sean McHugh is number 3 on the list. He is the versatile jack of all trades Tight End/Fullback. A jack of all trades but master of none. He did perform ok last year and Bruce Arians likes his versatility. So, he's probably in no danger of not making the team. That's 3 TE's. Probably all that will make the team. The Steelers did take a Tight End in the 7th round out of Arkansas State, David Johnson. Bruce is infatuated with the position. He'd probably have 5 or 6 of them if there were enough roster spots. Johnson is a receiver, but also has been rated well as a blocker. I'd say he might be able to play himself onto the practice squad unless he looks better than McHugh. Not totally out of the question. Tomorrow I'll review QB's, Saturday RBs, Sunday Lineman, then move on to the defense. Stay Tuned. Rember Huey Richardson. Another name from the past. Not a good memory for whatever scout and coaches that decided to draft him. I'm sure they're still having nightmares over that one.

Training Camp

Once again the Steelers managed to get all their draft picks signed and into camp on time. That's just how quality organizations do it. It's nice to have fan bragging rights with all non Steeler fans and for that matter non Penguin fans, but it's time again to show everyone else more evidence that the Steelers will continue their greatness.
Each day I'm going to look at a position, today I'll start out with the Wide Receivers in the order I think the depth chart will shake out. It's looking like they'll probably keep 5, with another on the practice squad.
Of course the number 1 and number 2 receivers are set, a certain guy named Hines Ward likely is set as one of those 2. Santonio Holmes, after his fabulous catch on the Steelers last drive, is set to take over the number 1 spot, but Hines will have something to say about that as he showed last year. He will never give up his spot without a fight.
They will be looking for a number 3 wide receiver to take over for Nate Washington. It won't be an easy task, Nate made some great leaps and catches in some crunch time situations during his Steelers career, but he had his share of drops too.
Candidates for the rest of the spots are:
Number 3 Limas Sweed. I cringe watching replays and seeing him drop that deep pass for a likely touchdown in the playoffs. But he's big, 6'4" and has the big time college experience at Texas to his advantage. The Steelers believed they had a steal drafting him in the second round.
Shaun McDonald, a 7th year pro who last played for the The Detroit, 0-16, Lions. That is a shock to someone's culture, going from a winless team to a Super Bowl winner. I'm thinking he'll be the number 4 with an outside chance at number 3 if Limas doesn't play well, if he works hard and shows some dependability in training camp. Not a speed burner or anything but they're looking for dependability.
I'm thinking number 5 will be Dallas Baker. He's a 6'3" receiver out of Florida. Spent most of 2 years on the practice squad. His size doesn't hurt and I've seen a lot of good things said about his work ethic and performance, hasn't translated to the regular season though, yet. This may be his year.
The rest of the group will fight for Baker or McDonald's spot or a practice squad or special teams spot. They include: Mike Wallace, a rookie draft pick out of Mississippi, Martin Nance a second year player out of Miami of Ohio (could get some support from another Miami grad playing QB), Stephen Black, a rookie out of Memphis, Tyler Grisham a rookie out of Clemson, Brandon Williams, a four year vet out of Wisconsin. I look for Mike Wallace to make the team as a special teams player, but I don't think the others have much of a chance with the Steelers.
Tomorrow I'll take a look at Tight Ends. The only big question there is will Heath Miller get an extension before he becomes a free agent. Til tomorrow.

Love the picture of the guy with the Troy Polamullet in the Post-Gazette blog today, http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/blogngold/archive/2009/08/03/sdgfsdfgsdg.aspx?CommentPosted=true#commentmessage

About time to switch to the Steelers

Of course I'm still going to follow the Pirates and see what other interesting things Mr. Huntington has up his sleeve, but it's getting to be Steelers time. Keep it up Andrew McCutcheon and Garrett Jones. You're making it interesting enough for me to follow. It will also be interesting to see how Tim Alderson shakes out and where Pedro Alvarez ends up by the end of the season, I'm betting AAA.

Some accolades

Despite having all these new players, my current favorite, Garrett Jones was just named rookie of the month. Here are his stats, 10 HRs, .310 Average, 17 RBIs, 7 doubles, 5 stolen bases, and a .700 slugging percentage. Can you imagine what the Pirates record would be without those stats. He is about the only power threat they have right now. Hopefully Ryan Doumit will get on a hot streak and provide some, but right now it's Garrett. Sorry, Andrew McCutcheon, 3 HRs in one game is nothing to sneeze at. Keep up the good work you two.

The Bucs were again anemic on offense tonight. One new addition kept Petit from having a no hitter. That would be somewhat understandable if the Petit I was talking about was Andy, but..... the Petit I'm referring to here is Yusmeiro. Who? this is not a misprint, Yusmeiro. Again, a struggling pitcher has his way with the Pirates. Not a new story.

By the way is Zach Duke starting to look similar to the pitcher of the previous 2 seasons. Maybe he's wondering why he didn't get traded. Give it another year Zach.

BACK!

After a great vacation I'm back. In the meantime Adam LaRoche was traded twice and ended up back in Atlanta. Like he woke up from a dream where he was traded to another team, played on that team with his brother for a short time and then woke up to find it was all just a dream, sounds like a Dallas episode for all of you old enough to remember that. I also missed the rest of the infield being traded except Adam's brother and the Ryan Doumit. Another post later. Stay tuned.

By the way just got my Steeler Digest over vacation. It is chock full of great stories. Check it out
